Lens Replacement Surgery at Precision Vision London

What is Lens Replacement Surgery?

Lens Replacement Surgery, also known as refractive lens exchange (RLE), involves replacing the eye’s natural lens with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) to correct vision issues such as hypermetropia (long-sightedness), myopia (short-sightedness), and presbyopia (age-related vision decline). This procedure aims to improve vision clarity and reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses. Many of our patients report rapid recovery and significant improvement in their vision post-surgery.

How Does Lens Replacement Surgery Work?

This advanced procedure involves removing the eye’s natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL), ensuring proper light focus through the eye. The surgery is quick, easy, and widely regarded as safe and effective. Our professional team will conduct thorough screenings and tests to determine your suitability for the procedure.

Lens replacement surgery will not alter the appearance or colour of your eyes. Experience the life-changing benefits of lens replacement surgery at Precision Vision London. Schedule your consultation today!

Benefits of Lens Replacement Surgery

  • Permanent Solution:  Unlike glasses or contact lenses that need frequent replacements, lens replacement surgery provides a lasting correction for your vision prescription
  • Enhanced Visual Freedom: Enjoy the freedom of not needing glasses or contact lenses daily. Participate in activities such as swimming without the hassle of prescription eyewear.
  • Reduced Risk of Eye Issues: Contact lenses can increase the risk of eye infections and ulcers. Lens replacement surgery minimises this risk and eliminates it entirely after recovery.
  • Boost in Confidence: Improve your confidence by no longer worrying about how you look in glasses in photos or social settings.
  • Cost-Effective: Over a lifetime, the cost of glasses and contact lenses can add up. Lens replacement surgery is a one-time investment that corrects your vision permanently.
  • Environmental Impact: Reduce environmental waste from discarded contact lenses by opting for lens replacement surgery.
  • Comfort: Say goodbye to the discomfort of heavy glasses and the imprints they leave on your nose and ears.
  • Clear Vision with Masks: Avoid the inconvenience of fogged-up glasses while wearing masks.

About Intraocular Lens Implants (IOLs)

Welcome to Precision Vision – Your Leading Specialist in Intraocular Lens Implants

At Precision Vision, we elevate beyond the standard offerings of NHS providers. While basic Monofocal lenses are common elsewhere, our commitment to delivering truly tailored treatments sets us apart. We focus on customizing intraocular lens (IOL) implants based on your unique needs, determined through an in-depth consultation with our experienced surgeons.

Unlike traditional multifocal IOLs that initially promised improvements in distance and near vision, our clinic recognizes the evolving demands on intermediate vision in today’s digital age. Introducing Trifocal IOLs, the latest generation of multifocal lenses that redefine vision correction.

Trifocal IOLs provide a comprehensive solution, correcting distance, near, and crucially, intermediate vision. This innovation ensures you can perform daily tasks, including computer work, without the need for glasses. Unlike varifocal glasses or multifocal contact lenses, adapting to Trifocal IOLs is seamless and natural.

The cutting-edge technology behind Trifocal IOLs ensures efficient light transmittance through the lens implant, leading to improved intermediate vision with minimal glare and halos, especially noticeable at night. Published reports emphasize elevated levels of patient satisfaction, superior vision quality (especially during nighttime), and reduced dependence on glasses. Imagine a life with clear vision at all distances!

Precision Vision exclusively embraces these revolutionary Trifocal lenses. As an independent clinic with no ties to specific lens manufacturers, we have the flexibility to correct a wide range of prescriptions. Our reputation is founded on successfully treating patients considered unsuitable by other clinics.

Beyond the immediate benefits of vision correction, our Lens Replacement procedure also guards against future cataract development. This means you can enjoy a glasses-free life with the assurance that your vision is optimized for the long term.

Types of Intraocular Lens Implants (IOLs)

We offer different types of IOLs, which can give you clear vision at different distances:

Monofocal: Available in both spherical and toric (for astigmatism) designs, this is single focus intraocular lens (IOL) which gives clear distance vision, and glasses are needed for reading and computer use.
Trifocal: Available in both spherical and toric (for astigmatism) designs, these lenses are able to correct more than one field of vision by using layered concentric circles, enabling for simultaneous correction of near, distance and intermediate vision leaving patients largely glasses free.

Lenses available at Precision Vision

Precision Vision is a completely independent surgeon led clinic and have no affiliation with any manufacturers or paid consultants enabling us to choose the best lenses to fit our patients’ visual and lifestyle needs. We have access to the three most widely used Trifocal (intraocular lenses) IOLs:

AT LISA (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany) – available in spherical and toric designs.
FineVision (PhysIOL, Liege, Belgium) – available in spherical and toric designs.
PanOptix (Alcon, Fort Worth, Texas) – available in spherical and toric designs.

Lens Replacement FAQ's

Who is suitable for Lens Replacement surgery?

Lens Replacement treatment is suitable for those over the age of 40 whose natural lens has started to age and will naturally deteriorate over time. There is no upper age limit and no prescription limitation. The only requirement is that your prescription has stabilised and that it is not currently in the midst of a decline.

Lens Replacement is suitable for patients who have very high and complicated prescriptions that cannot be treated by Laser Eye Surgery or Implantable Contact Lens treatment.

What is the difference between Lens Replacement and cataract surgery?

The Lens Replacement procedure is virtually identical to cataract surgery. The only difference is that a clear lens is removed in the Lens Replacement treatment and a cloudy lens is removed in cataract surgery.

What are Monofocal implants?

Traditional intra-ocular implants are Monofocal lenses which focus light to only one point, meaning they correct distance vision only and glasses will be needed for near vision. This is the type of lens that is typically used by the NHS.

What are Trifocal implants?

A Trifocal intraocular lens has more than one point of focus, enabling clear distance, intermediate and near vision. It has revolutionised the results of treatment and allows for patients to be glasses free.

Are Trifocal lenses like varifocal spectacles or contact lenses?

The optical design of intraocular lenses is completely different to varifocal spectacles. Instead of a patient needing to move their head to adjust the focus, they will be able to comfortably see distance, intermediate and near without having to make any movements. Layered concentric circles are used to correct each form of prescription issue allowing for simultaneous correction of all fields of vision.

What lenses do Precision Vision provide?

Precision Vision provide lenses from the following companies:

What if you are unsuitable for a Trifocal lenses?

Suitability for treatment and the type of lens is determined at your consultation.

If you are unsuitable for Trifocal intraocular lenses, Monofocal lenses are available. These can be used to either aim for monovision (one eye for distance, one eye for reading), or to correct your distance vision in both eyes and glasses will be needed for near vision. This will all be explained in detail during your consultation

How long does the lens implant last?

Once the natural lens has been removed and replaced with lens implants patients will likely never require surgery again. The materials from which the lenses are made from have been subject to accelerated ageing tests. Results have demonstrated that the lens material will last in excess of 150 years before showing signs of degradation.

Will the procedure be painful?

No pain is felt as anaesthetic drops are used to numb the eye. However some discomfort or pressure can be felt during the procedure.

How long after surgery will you be able to see clearly?

Most patients notice a difference to their vision immediately after the procedure. Distance vision is the first field of vision to settle, typically taking 24 to 48 hours. However, it can take slightly longer to adjust to the new reading vision.

How much time off work will you require?

Generally you will need 3-5 days off work (for most office jobs). Two for the treatment and one or two days afterwards to rest. Patients are able to perform most day to day tasks one day after surgery without any difficulty. Your working environment will also be taken into consideration and our surgeon will advise on what precautions should be taken at your consultation.

Will there be restrictions after surgery?

There will be a few restrictions after treatment. Examples include avoiding sports that may cause trauma to the eye, avoiding dusty environments and lifting heavy weights. At your consultation, we will take into consideration your lifestyle and hobbies and advise you accordingly.

Why can’t you have both eyes treated on the same day?

There is a small risk of infection with these types of procedures. To minimise the risk, each eye will be treated on a separate day.

Where will the treatment take place?

All our treatments are carried out at our Precision Vision clinic on 22 A, Harely Street London W1 9PB. Precision Vision is one of the very few clinics in the UK where everything from consultation to surgery and aftercare is conducted under one roof.

Can you develop cataracts in the future?

The Refractive Lens Exchange procedure involves removing the natural lens where a cataract would have developed. When a patient undergoes Lens Replacement treatment, it means that they will never develop a cataract in either eye at any point in the future.

What is Posterior Capsular Opacification (PCO)?

Posterior capsular opacification (PCO) can sometimes occur after Lens Replacement. Sometimes you can develop a thickening of the back (posterior) of the lens capsule which holds your artificial lens in place. This thickening of the capsule causes your vision to become cloudy but it can safely and easily be treated with a quick YAG laser procedure.

Will you be able to feel the implant?

The lens implant is inside the eye where there are no nerves or sensation, so it cannot be felt. It will not feel like a contact lens and you will be completely unaware that it is there, apart from experiencing greatly improved vision.

How many times will you need to attend the Harley Street clinic?

Your consultation, treatment, one day post op, two week and the six week aftercare appointments are carried out at Precision Vision’s Harley Street clinic. After this time, we can hand you over to the care of one of our nationwide independent optometrist partners, allowing you to stay closer to home for the remainder of the follow-up appointments.
