Corneal implants involve the surgical insertion of synthetic or biological materials into the cornea to address vision-related issues, such as refractive errors or corneal irregularities. About Corneal Implants

About Corneal Implants Treatment Benefits Aftercare

Explore the advanced treatment options for Keratoconus at Precision Vision, where we specialise in utilising corneal implants like INTACS and Kerarings. These implants are recommended for individuals whose Keratoconus has naturally stabilised or has been treated with Collagen Cross-Linking.

Corneal implants, intra-stromal corneal inserts comprising of two clear crescent-shaped pieces of bio-compatible material, play a pivotal role in reshaping the cornea and correcting the visual distortion caused by Keratoconus. These inserts are strategically inserted into the cornea, flattening the surface and improving refractive errors.

Key Advantages of Corneal Implants:

1. Reshape and Correct: Corneal implants are designed to reshape the irregular cornea, correcting visual distortion and improving overall vision.

2. Partial Correction: While glasses or contact lenses may still be required post-treatment, corneal implants vastly enhance a patient’s best-corrected vision.

3. Comfortable Contact Lens Wear: The treatment is specifically designed to enhance the comfort of wearing contact lenses, providing a more comfortable experience for patients.

4. Reversible and Exchangeable: Corneal implants are completely reversible and exchangeable if needed, offering flexibility in the treatment approach.

Precision Vision understands the unique needs of Keratoconus patients, and our corneal implant treatments are aimed at not only improving vision but also ensuring comfort and flexibility. The procedure is reversible and exchangeable, providing patients with peace of mind and options for personalised care.

The treatment takes approximately 30 minutes for both eyes. The process is as follows:

Anaesthetic drops are used to numb the eye.
Eye lid guard used to prevent blinking.
A micro incision is made in the cornea using the laser (blade free).
The laser is used to separate the corneal layers to form a tunnel in stroma.
The corneal implants are inserted into the tunnels created by the laser on each side of the pupil.
Our specialist nurse will go through the precautions and medications that are needed to aid your recovery.
Your first post-operative appointment will take place 4 to 5 days after your treatment.
They are biocompatible and there is no risk of rejection.
Reversible and exchangeable.
Corneal implants cannot be felt.
Better corrected vision and improved tolerance to contact lenses.
FDA approved in 2004

On the day of treatment you will be provided with an eye cover for the treated eye, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and hydrating drops. You will be advised when to take the drops. At your first post-operative check 4 to 5 days after surgery of this type, your surgeon will examine the treated eye and assess the rate of healing.

The recovery period can take up to a week; some discomfort and light sensitivity can be experienced for a couple of days after treatment. You are likely to suffer from dry eyes whilst your cornea heals, this is completely normal.

Visual fluctuations can last between 3 to 6 months, once the prescription stabilises new glasses and contact lenses can be fitted. You are required to attend regular post-operative appointments throughout the year. These check-ups can be conducted at our Precision Vision or at one of our optometrist network partners from 3 months onwards.
