At Precision Vision London, your vision is in the safest hands. Led by Dr. Radwan Almousa MD, an award-winning refractive and cataract surgeon with extensive international training, we specialise in delivering outstanding lens replacement results through precision diagnostics, world-class laser technology, and individually tailored treatment plans.
At Precision Vision London, we provide advanced Lens Replacement Surgery in Harley Street, one of London’s most prestigious medical districts. The procedure is similar to cataract surgery, the eye’s natural crystalline lens is gently removed and replaced with a premium intraocular lens (IOL), customised to your vision needs.
Lens Replacement Surgery, also known as Lens Exchange (LE), Clear Lens Exchange (CLE), Natural Lens Replacement, or Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), is designed to permanently correct a wide range of vision problems.
This innovative treatment is especially effective for people suffering from presbyopia (difficulty seeing up close), as well as those needing correction for distance vision or astigmatism. The procedure itself is quick, safe, and painless typically taking less than 20 minutes per eye. Both eyes are usually treated on the same day, allowing patients to walk away with clearer vision and freedom from glasses or contact lenses.
Because each eye is unique, the type of intraocular lens we use is carefully selected to match your lifestyle and prescription. Recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the safest medical treatments worldwide, Lens Replacement Surgery at Precision Vision London offers a proven pathway to long-lasting clarity and confidence.
Most adults over the age of 45 who are experiencing presbyopia (difficulty with near vision) or early signs of cataracts are suitable candidates for Lens Replacement Surgery, also known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Clear Lens Exchange (CLE). This procedure is particularly beneficial for individuals who no longer want to rely on reading glasses, bifocals, or varifocal lenses.
Lens Replacement Surgery can effectively correct both distance and near vision, as well as astigmatism, by replacing the natural lens of the eye with an advanced intraocular lens (IOL). This makes it a strong option for people who may not be suitable for laser eye surgery due to higher prescriptions, thinner corneas, or age-related changes in the natural lens.
You may not be suitable if you have untreated eye conditions such as advanced glaucoma, severe macular degeneration, corneal disease, or uncontrolled systemic health issues like diabetes or autoimmune disorders. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are also advised to postpone treatment.
At Precision Vision London, our detailed diagnostic screening ensures that every recommendation is completely personalised.
If Lens Replacement Surgery is not the best fit for you, our surgeons will discuss other tailored treatment paths based on your age, prescription, and eye health, ensuring you always have a safe and effective route to clearer vision

Our approach revolves around prioritising your optimal well-being.
Your first point of contact will be with Precision Vision London’s highly trained and knowledgeable patient coordinators.
On the day of your treatment, our clinical team will guide you through the process and address any concerns or questions you may have.
At Precision Vision London, we believe that it is essential to be selective to ensure that every patient has the best treatment to suit their visual and lifestyle needs which is why determining suitability is incredibly important.
Your aftercare begins immediately after treatment when you are taken to the recovery room to relax and, when you are ready to leave, our specialist nurse will examine you before you go home.
Lens Replacement treatment is suitable for those over the age of 40 whose natural lens has started to age and will naturally deteriorate over time. There is no upper age limit and no prescription limitation. The only requirement is that your prescription has stabilised and that it is not currently in the midst of a decline.
Lens Replacement is suitable for patients who have very high and complicated prescriptions that cannot be treated by Laser Eye Surgery or Implantable Contact Lens treatment.
The Lens Replacement procedure is virtually identical to cataract surgery. The only difference is that a clear lens is removed in the Lens Replacement treatment and a cloudy lens is removed in cataract surgery.
Traditional intra-ocular implants are Monofocal lenses which focus light to only one point, meaning they correct distance vision only and glasses will be needed for near vision. This is the type of lens that is typically used by the NHS.
A Trifocal intraocular lens has more than one point of focus, enabling clear distance, intermediate and near vision. It has revolutionised the results of treatment and allows for patients to be glasses free.
The optical design of intraocular lenses is completely different to varifocal spectacles. Instead of a patient needing to move their head to adjust the focus, they will be able to comfortably see distance, intermediate and near without having to make any movements. Layered concentric circles are used to correct each form of prescription issue allowing for simultaneous correction of all fields of vision.
Precision Vision provide lenses from the following companies:
Suitability for treatment and the type of lens is determined at your consultation.
If you are unsuitable for Trifocal intraocular lenses, Monofocal lenses are available. These can be used to either aim for monovision (one eye for distance, one eye for reading), or to correct your distance vision in both eyes and glasses will be needed for near vision. This will all be explained in detail during your consultation
Once the natural lens has been removed and replaced with lens implants patients will likely never require surgery again. The materials from which the lenses are made from have been subject to accelerated ageing tests. Results have demonstrated that the lens material will last in excess of 150 years before showing signs of degradation.
No pain is felt as anaesthetic drops are used to numb the eye. However some discomfort or pressure can be felt during the procedure.
Most patients notice a difference to their vision immediately after the procedure. Distance vision is the first field of vision to settle, typically taking 24 to 48 hours. However, it can take slightly longer to adjust to the new reading vision.
Generally you will need 3-5 days off work (for most office jobs). Two for the treatment and one or two days afterwards to rest. Patients are able to perform most day to day tasks one day after surgery without any difficulty. Your working environment will also be taken into consideration and our surgeon will advise on what precautions should be taken at your consultation.
There will be a few restrictions after treatment. Examples include avoiding sports that may cause trauma to the eye, avoiding dusty environments and lifting heavy weights. At your consultation, we will take into consideration your lifestyle and hobbies and advise you accordingly.
All our treatments are carried out at our Precision Vision clinic on 22 A, Harely Street London W1 9PB. Precision Vision is one of the very few clinics in the UK where everything from consultation to surgery and aftercare is conducted under one roof.
The Refractive Lens Exchange procedure involves removing the natural lens where a cataract would have developed. When a patient undergoes Lens Replacement treatment, it means that they will never develop a cataract in either eye at any point in the future.
The lens implant is inside the eye where there are no nerves or sensation, so it cannot be felt. It will not feel like a contact lens and you will be completely unaware that it is there, apart from experiencing greatly improved vision.
Your consultation, treatment, one day post op, two week and the six week aftercare appointments are carried out at Precision Vision’s Harley Street clinic. After this time, we can hand you over to the care of one of our nationwide independent optometrist partners, allowing you to stay closer to home for the remainder of the follow-up appointments.

Lens Replacement Surgery, also known as Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) or Clear Lens Exchange (CLE), is a life-changing procedure designed to free you from glasses, contact lenses, and the hassle of age-related vision changes. By replacing your natural lens with a premium intraocular lens (IOL), this treatment corrects both near and distance vision — making it ideal for patients who find laser eye surgery unsuitable due to age, prescription, or corneal thickness.
Unlike laser treatments that reshape the cornea, Lens Replacement addresses the source of visual decline — the natural lens itself. A key advantage is that you will also never develop cataracts in the future, as the artificial lens does not age or become cloudy. Trusted globally and endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as one of the safest medical procedures, Lens Replacement has become a proven solution for long-term vision correction.
The entire procedure takes less than 20 minutes per eye, with both eyes treated on the same day. Aftercare begins the following day with a detailed check-up, ensuring smooth recovery and excellent long-term results.
At Precision Vision London, led by world-renowned surgeon Dr. CT Pillai (30+ years’ experience, 50,000+ successful surgeries), you can trust that your treatment will be safe, precise, and tailored to your unique vision needs.
At Precision Vision London, we go beyond the standard lens options offered by NHS providers. While many clinics rely on basic Monofocal IOLs that only correct distance vision, our focus is on personalised lens selection to match your lifestyle and prescription needs.

Today’s world demands more than just clear distance and reading vision. That’s why we specialise in the latest generation of Multifocal/Trifocal IOLs designed to correct near, intermediate, and distance vision seamlessly. Whether you’re reading a book, working on a computer, or driving at night, Multifocal/Trifocal lenses provide natural, glasses-free vision across all distances.

Unlike multifocal contact lenses or varifocal glasses, adapting to Multifocal/Trifocal IOLs is smooth and intuitive. Studies show high levels of patient satisfaction, improved night vision, and minimal glare or halos offering you true visual independence.
At Precision Vision, our independence means we are not tied to any single manufacturer, giving our surgeons the freedom to recommend the best IOL for your needs.
Monofocal IOLs – Clear distance vision; available in spherical and toric (for astigmatism) designs. Reading and computer glasses are still required.
Trifocal IOLs – The latest innovation, correcting near, intermediate, and distance vision. Available in both spherical and toric designs, these lenses leave most patients largely glasses-free.
We offer access to the world’s most trusted Trifocal IOLs:

With thousands of successful treatments and patients who were previously considered unsuitable elsewhere, Precision Vision London is the trusted choice for advanced IOL implants in Harley Street.
These three advanced instruments, the VERION Image Guided System, the Centurion Vision System, and the LuxOR Ophthalmic Microscope together comprise the Alcon Refractive Suite, delivering unmatched precision, safety, and consistency in every procedure.
This is used to capture a digital reference image of the eye during the initial assessment which is used to create a surgical plan. This equipment is also used throughout the treatment allowing the surgeon to see all incisions and alignments in real time, improving accuracy and minimising errors especially whilst correcting astigmatism.
This is the newest phacoemulsification system available on the market, it breaks up and removes the natural lens. It allows for smaller incisions and is able to optimise every phase of the lens removal. The device also controls the intra-ocular pressure throughout the treatment and enhances the control of the surgeon, consequently improving the patient’s outcome and accelerating the recovery process.
The Lux-OR LX3 with Q-VUE Ophthalmic Microscope is designed to provide superior visualisation throughout the surgical procedure, this microscope is able to expand the visual field with a highly stable, 6x greater red reflex zone, providing excellent visual detail with superior visualisation of the retina.

Lens replacement treatment, also known as refractive lens exchange (RLE) or clear lens exchange (CLE), is a surgical procedure designed to correct vision issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, and astigmatism. This surgery involves removing the eye's natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) customised to the patient's needs. Prior to surgery, a thorough eye examination is conducted to assess candidacy and determine the most suitable IOL type.
During the 15-30 minute outpatient procedure per eye, the natural lens is extracted through a small incision and substituted with the chosen IOL.
Recovery typically involves minimal discomfort and patients can resume normal activities within a few days to a week post-surgery. Follow-up appointments are scheduled to monitor healing progress, evaluate vision improvement, and make any necessary adjustments to the treatment plan. Lens replacement treatment provides a safe and effective option for vision correction, particularly for individuals unsuitable for other refractive surgeries. Despite potential risks such as infection or vision changes, discussing these factors with an eye surgeon helps patients make informed decisions tailored to their unique circumstances.
After undergoing lens replacement surgery at Precision Vision, your aftercare begins immediately in the recovery room where you can relax. When you're ready to leave, our specialist nurse will examine you before you go home. Your first post-operative check typically occurs within the first two days of treatment.
Following treatment, you can gradually resume normal activities, but there are restrictions on certain activities. The duration of waiting time before resuming physically exertive or high-risk activities varies, with the longest waiting period being six weeks after treatment. A full list of any applicable restrictions will be discussed during your consultation.
During your first check-up, either Precision Vision’s senior refractive optometrist or lead surgeon will examine your eyes. Patients can usually begin driving 2 to 3 days after lens replacement surgery, but this will be confirmed during your first post-operative check based on your eye examination and healing progress.
Dryness is common after treatment and may last up to a month, which is normal as part of the healing process.
Precision Vision offers outstanding patient care through its aftercare programme, featuring regular post-operative checks throughout the year to monitor your visual improvement. These checks can take place at the Harley Street clinic or with one of our partner optometrists in our independent network (from 3 months onwards).
Our comprehensive aftercare programme includes:

At Precision Vision, we prioritise personalised care to ensure every patient receives the most suitable treatment for their visual and lifestyle needs. Our consultations, lasting about 2 hours, involve thorough tests conducted by experienced refractive optometrists and technicians.
After comprehensive testing, patients will meet with our Medical Director, Dr. CT Pillai, or a trained specialist optometrist to discuss suitability and create a tailored treatment plan. Dilating drops are used during the consultation, lasting approximately six hours, affecting near vision and causing light sensitivity.
During the consultation, patients undergo various tests, including:
Following testing, patients meet with Dr. Pillai to discuss suitability, address concerns, and receive detailed information on risks and treatment options. An information booklet is provided to facilitate an informed decision-making process.
Precision Vision’s patient coordinators will assess your suitability over the phone and inform you of possible treatment options, saving time for unsuitable patients.
A confirmation letter with a medical questionnaire will be sent upon booking a consultation. Please fill it out before the initial assessment and bring it to the consultation or email it beforehand.
Contact lens wearers need to prepare for accurate results:
Bring at least two previous prescriptions, glasses, or contact lenses to your consultation, even if they are old. If not emailed, bring the medical questionnaire and any relevant medical records.
Dilating drops will be used, so avoid driving on the consultation day and bring sunglasses for sensitivity to light afterward.
